How to install our blinds and shades

A level, a drill and about fifteen minutes per window.

Before you start

Unpack on a clean floor and match each product to the window it was made for — the room label you entered at checkout is on your order confirmation. Count the brackets and screws. Confirm the width before you drill: an inside mount should slip into the opening with a small clearance on each side; an outside mount should match the size you entered.

Tools: a drill or driver, a tape measure, a pencil, a level, and a step stool. Drywall anchors if the brackets land on plaster or drywall rather than wood.

Mark and fix the brackets

Inside mount: hold a bracket in each top corner of the opening, flush with the front edge of the frame (or set back to the depth you planned), and mark the screw holes. Outside mount: hold the headrail or cassette where you want it, check it with a level, mark the bracket positions at each end — and a center bracket on wider products.

Drill pilot holes and fix the brackets. Check they are level with each other before you tighten fully; a headrail that is off by an eighth of an inch at one end will run crooked.

  • Level, then tighten
  • Pilot holes in wood; anchors in drywall
  • Center bracket on wide products

Mount the product

Blinds and shades: seat the headrail, cassette or tube in the brackets at one end, then at the other, and lock the brackets as the product's instructions show. Plantation shutters go up as a frame first; the panels then hang on the frame hinges. Each product's own installation manual, when available, is under "Downloads" on its product page — follow it over anything general here.

Add the valance (faux wood) last, once the product is in and working.

Test it

Lower and raise the product fully. Cordless lifts: pull the bottom rail straight down and lift it gently. Chain lifts: run the chain through its full travel. Motors: pair the remote as the enclosed instructions describe and run the shade to its limits.

If something binds, the usual cause is a bracket out of level or an inside mount that is tight against one side — loosen, adjust, and re-test rather than forcing it.
